ABRACADABRA

Abracadabra is an ancient Aramaic word which is the language scholars believe that Jesus spoke.  The first syllable, “abra” means “to create” and “cadabra” means, ”as I say” so it means, “to create as I say.” We create our dreams as we speak and share them with others. “Abracadabra” or may you create dreams as I speak these guided meditations, prayers and lullabies. Please see my web site www.RevBonnieTarwater.com for available dream groups, both in person and on line, or individually by phone or Skype for you to create as you speak your dreams.   If you have trouble sleeping this CD hopes to help you go to sleep as well.

As my teacher and mentor Rev. Dr. Jeremy Taylor has taught, all dreams come for healing and wholeness. Exploring the symbols and metaphors in dreams has been a spiritual practice used in all the world religions historically but unfortunately has been left out of many religious communities in recent times.  Carl Jung and the advent of psychology thankfully brought a renaissance of the celebration of dreams for healing and conscious relationship with this Mystery we call God.  Now, in the new millennium, we intuitively know that we are in urgent need of the inner wisdom that comes from dreams in order to—nothing short of– save ourselves and our planet.  The soul, higher power, Buddha nature, the kingdom of God within, consciousness, inner divinity–whatever you want to call it–can be accessed every night in our dreams. No experience or money is required.  Only a safe place to “create as you speak” is needed. I encourage you to join a dream group for they also will give you a sense of belonging and community too often lacking in the modern world

This Mystery we call God is the holy creative act of potentiality.  Moses in the Bible asks God who he shall say God is and God replies, “I am what I will be” (Exodus 3:1). Jacob   wrestles with an angel in a dream and is given a blessing and a new name, Israel which means “to struggle with God” (Genesis 32:28).  In the Christian Bible the angel Gabriel comes to Mary in a vision (sometimes a way of referring to dreams in the bible), and tells her that she will give birth to a divine child (Luke 1:26-38).  The universal myth of the birth of the Divine Child is found in many cultures and religions and in our Christmas story it includes a half dozen dreams that guide Joseph and Mary in their dangerous journey. Every night metaphoric angels or messengers wrestle and visit and guide us, just as they did with Jacob, Joseph and Mary thousands of years ago. Prophetic and inspired dreaming parents like Joseph and Mary must have given Jesus a dream practice.  I feel confident that Jesus, the Jewish mystic, honored dreams and I can imagine Jesus saying, “Abracadabra” as he commands demons and unconsciousness to be exorcised out of you or me or anyone in need of healing.  In Gnostic and Roman communities in the first few centuries of the Common Era the word abracadabra was used as a spell for healing. Sometimes the word was written on objects like jewelry or clothing for protection against disease.  In the guided mediations  I will ask you to imagine the word ”abracadabra”  written on the imaginary fabric of your dream incubation tent surrounding your bed for your dream protection and healing.

May we ask for the spirit of our ancestors from Jesus to Carl Jung to bless our dreams as we ask for miraculous healing for ourselves and our world.  We are in the company of other modern prophets, artists and scientist as diverse as Edgar Cayce to Albert Einstein, Mary Shelley who turned her nightmare into her book, Frankenstein, to great prophets like  Gandhi who dreamed of the idea of having a country wide work strike with prayer. Artists from Ingmar Bergman to Freda Kahlo, and musicians from Beethoven to Billy Joel have created as they spoke their dreams.

The guided meditations on this CD are inspired and adapted from Dr. Tamar Frankiel and Rabbi Judy Greenfeld’s brilliant book, Entering the Temple of Dreams. I give thanks to Dr. Tamar Frankiel whose books on Jewish mysticism have enlightened me as I explore mysticism from a Christian and interfaith perspective. Thank you for being such an inspiration as a teacher in my seminary education.  I also give special thanks to Connie Kaplan for her generosity of including me in dream groups.  A very special thank you to Rev. Dr. Jeremy Taylor whose dream certificate program, Marin Institute for Projective Dream Work, instigated my work on this project and whose brilliant books and dream workshops began my journey into dream work. Thank you for all that you have done for me and so many of us. Also special thanks to my music teachers Walt Richards and my partner in the making of this CD Bob Hitzel as well as to my beloved children  David and Ben. A very special thanks to all those who have shared their dreams with me and most of all to my husband Walt Rutherford who has miraculously healed me with his love and his listening in the morning to my dreams and sharing his with me. I thank this Mystery we call God for God’s dream of creation.
